  • Canyon Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Canoga Park, California 91303

BEWARE!!!! Most ratings written about nursing homes are written by relatives, who don't really get a chance to see the whole picture. HERE is a warning to you from someone who had the misfortune of being that patient. Yes, at first glance Canyon Oaks looks cheerful and relatively tidy. AND, Yes, the employees are usually nice and helpful to the extent they can be with what they have to work with. To put it right out on the table, however, the chief administrator, Mr. Jason Nagy, could not give a damn about you or the eventual outcome of your health. The almighty dollar is all that drives this man.

Are you aware that to place a patient in a room with someone who has a contagious disease is against the law? Are you also aware that, thanks to the State of California's liberal policies, a patient's medical records are sealed. This law works out perfectly for a place like Mr. Nagy's, who wants to fill every bed to maximize profits.

When I was admitted to Canyon Oaks center after a knee replacement surgery, I was placed in a room with a very sick patient. He could barely move and when he coughed the noise he made was similar to a sump pump. When I complained to Mr. Nagy, I received a "so sorry" diatribe from him, and I was forced to stay there almost two weeks. I finally did get moved, but to a room where the patient cried and screamed like a little baby. When I was finally released from that hell hole, I noted that I now, to a lesser extent, had contracted a similar cough. I met with my Kaiser doctors and asked them to find out what this guy had so my malady could be addressed. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that medical PRIVACY LAWS prohibited me or the doctor from finding out this information. Seems more to me that if I was found to have this same infection that I could hold them liable and what better way to hide it than with a privacy law.

Over the past 6 months, it has been difficult for 3 Doctors to diagnose my problem. The cough has gotten worse and worse. I can't sleep at night because it is almost impossible to catch my breath! I have also become so weak that I find it impossible to do much more than watch TV and work on the computer. In short, thanks to Jason Nagy's negligence, my life is almost ruined!! As a warning to you, be sure that you find out about the malady your roommate has, and be VERY AGGRESSIVE about letting these people shove you in just any room like a piece of meat. Single rooms would certainly alleviate the majority of these problems but, of course, would cut into their profits.

This has been the third year that my grandfather and grandmother are at West Hills Health & Rehab. They receive best service possible and they are both happy and think this is their own home.

Staffs are very friendly, caring, and nurses are competent and professional plus the rehab personnel are amazing!! The rooms are big with each room have their own bathroom, which makes it different from other facilities that one bathroom is shared between two adjacent rooms. We are impressed with various events and activities they provide to keep residents active and connect families, staffs, and residents together. Also I like the way they greed and welcome you upon arrival to the facility. The care and love is incredible!!

Physical therapy sessions are very good and productive. Other than that, the quality of care is pathetic. This morning my father was given a shower. The caretaker noticed something on his hip and placed him back in his bed, covering him with a wet towel. Several people came and went, looking at the "sore" but left him there, still covered by a wet towel. It wasn't until 3 1/2 hours later that someone helped him dress and take him to the dining room for lunch.

A few weeks ago I stopped by for a visit and found him sitting in his wheel chair, next to his bed. He said, "thank God you're here, I've been trying to get someone's attention for a couple of hours to help me into bed so I could take a nap".

There are a few good care takers but overall my father seems to be neglected, only tended to when it is absolutely necessary, such as medication time. It seems that no one pops in to check on how he is doing and if he needs anything.

I'm trying to get my Mom to find better facility for my Dad, she's considering it now…

Since Medicare gave an overall 1 review of this place, I would add that I have been there to visit patients several times over three years. If you judge by external appearances (which many do), the place is clean looking BUT poor patient care is apparent. Several times the women I was visiting asked for pain medication but were refused, curtly and with no explanation. Poor PT as well.

I can't believe anyone would say anything nice about this place. It looks all shiny and pretty in the halls, but the care was unbelievably bad. Horrifying. Frightening. Nobody (ok, one nurse was cool) listened, or even took my pleas regarding my Mom's pain seriously. They talked down to me as if I was stupid. The aids we hired to be with her 24 hours (from 24 Hour Care, a wonderful organization) had no better luck. Canyon Oaks employees lied on reports, saying that my Mother slept through the night, when she screamed through the night, and that they had given her medicine when they hadn't. I know this because the aids we hired took notes. My mother might as well have been in a hotel room, for all they cared. I will live with a horrifying memory of this place for the rest of my life. My Mother in pain, screaming for her grandmother, and not one nurse responding. If you have a loved one, do not trust their care to this place. Please.

facility is very nice, unfortunately is smells of urine and feces. I did a walk through unannounced and saw residents sitting in the halls unattended. I finally encountered two employess that were coming out of a break room. Facility seems to be fully occupied, with limited staff. I saw numerous patients just sitting and staring. I did not see any social interaction between the staff nd patients. This place would not be my list to leave my loved one

January 2012 : I went to visit a patient, and a urinary catheter tube was resting up higher than her body on a pillow. It was clogged. I watched while a L.V.N. came into the room, looked at her charts, gave her pills, all the while leaning over the clogged tubes. Nurse didn't do anything about the tubes.

Finally I couldn't stand it anymore and asked "Why are they up? You're feeding her antibiotics but likely causing an infection." Nurse promptly fixed the tubes to drain away from the body, and said she would flush the tubes.

While the facility looks very nice with granite countertops, and has friendly people, they need to do their job for which they are hired, first. *Health* care.

My aunt was a SELF PAY resident at this facility for almost 5 years. I always thought her care was given at a quality standard. However, she suffered a stroke at the facility this year and had a very valuable family heirloom diamond ring stolen from her finger while she was unable to stop them. Her hand was terribly bruised when we later saw her at the hospital. When asked where her ring was the staff simply said no one ever saw her with a ring. I have numerous pictures of her wearing the ring at their facility. Just really sad to have this happen to a loved one entrusted in their care.

the first that should ask ourselves before admitting our aged loved ones at any nursing home is that, "Do we want our own parents to stay at a place like this?".

Having said such, West Valley Healthcare Center truly does outstand when it comes to making their residents feel loved, well-cared for --if not better, just as they were at home.

My grandmother was once admitted there and during her stay, the staff were just exceptional. everyone was very warm and accommodating. Not to mention, the place was just beautiful!

you don't feel like you're in a hospital-like setting at all like most nursing homes do. Big Props for the management who did a really great job at making this place as beautifully homy as possible.

In addition to that, every need that my grandmother had during her stay were addressed promptly. Im not saying they're perfect, but i sure am confident that they're the best i've seen so far!

Keep up the good job you guys. We sure do appreciate everything you have done for my family. God Bless you all!
