My stepfather was at this facility for two weeks. At 62 he died of a heart attack while at the facility. To say that his care was subpart would be an understatement. Sometimes the place smelled so bad that my three year old granddaughter made a comment. My stepfather was left paralyzed and with no sensation from the waist down. The only way to know he was soiled was by the smell. He would spend hours asking someone to clean him. On his last day of life one of the aides told him he should get room freshener because the room smelled. He told her it was because he could not get anyone to clean him and she told him not to be cheap - that the freshener was only 99 cents. This man who worked 43 years and never accepted anything from anyone was humiliated. My mom had to go to the hospital because the food was not edible and all complaints about the food and care went on deaf ears. On the day he died I was on my way to tour another facility. When the doctor called to tell me my stepfather had died these were her exact words: "Ms Abrams, Lopez was in rehab but he collapsed. We called 911 but he didn't make it. ". I was driving with my 3 year old grandmother and my mother (his wife of 45 years). I had to act as if nothing happened until I was able to get them home so that I could tell her at home with other family present. This doctor's insensitivity was cruel. If you have a loved one, do not put them in this place. Its not only that they are short staffed, its that they just don't care. No human should have to bear the indignities of these people who call themselves professionals. By the way, other patients who I spoke with had the exact same complaints. Its saddens me that my stepfather's last morning on this earth was in the company of these animals.

This Nursing Home is the worst. I went to this facility yesterday, and there is a real short supply of professionalism. The Security Guard at the main desk was speaking to people like he was on the street, and we were all his friends. I got to the 4th floor to find the Dining room is where they had stockpiled all the patients. The stench of Urine was so overpowering. I then walked to the nurses station to complain and the Nurses station was being staffed by a Janitor. I asked several times to speak with the Head Nurse and she or he was no where to be found. This Facility Owner Mark was on sight and when I brought this to his attention he threatened to have me arrested. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE OR MINE.. RUN!!

Hempstead Park is one of the worst nursing homes ever. Patients are treated roughly and without compassion. Their diapers are changed only when family is there and keep asking for them to be changed. Often my mother's hair smelled badly. I never once saw an RN in the time my mom was there and only saw LPN's a few times. The people who took care of the patients were NA's and HHA's though I don't even know if they were certified. I tried to get my mom into another nursing home but I kept getting a runaround. My mom died several days ago of cardiac arrest {she never had heart disease}. Please don't let your loved ones have the same fate!!!

don't know if they were certified.

My uncle was in the rehab section of Nassau Extended Care for approximatley one week when he came down with what seemed like either a bad cold or laryngitis ( he could hardly speak). The Dr saw him and ordered antibiotics, a week later he wasn't any better and asked her to take a look again. I was then told that an ENT Dr had looked at him and wanted to order a scope down his throat. I should also mention that he has COPD and was getting nebulizer treatments for that. They also told me they did a chest xray with negative results. Four days later I went to check up on him and he looked terrible and they now had him on oxygen…I never even received a phone call. I didn't need a medical degree to see that he was in some sort of pulmonary distress and we insisted on him going to the emergency room. Something none of the "professionals at the facility could figure out"? I fully believe that if I had not visited him on that day the only phone call I would have gotten from them was that he passed away. The tests at the hospital showed he had pneumonia in both lungs and was extremely sick. The Dr at the hospital told me he had had this for around 5 days and that if anyone had listened to his chest sounds they would have known something was up. Amazing!!!!! I don't think they ever used a stethiscope. I would never recommend anyone to this place..not sure where their DR got their degrees. This was totally unacceptable.

I would put my loved one in a stable on a farm before subjecting them to the people at this facility. In my opinion they don"t care about anything but Fridays paycheck. They have been desensitized to the point of neglect. Most patients I observed were in disarray and not groomed or bathed. I gave them 1 star because a 1/4 of a star was not available.

In mid-December 2010 my mother was at Nassau Extended Care for not even two weeks when she had complaints of the staff not checking on her or her roommate within a reasonable time considering some are confined to bed unless assisted by a nurse. Often aides or nurses did not come to check the oxygen machine and once it was found in the OFF position, for who knows how long! Also , the medication she went in with was not being given properly. They are there to help these sick people whether it be for rehab or longer and I did not feel they did their best at all! My mother passed away suddenly, in the rehab and I cant help but visualize how this whole senerio happened! I did not have a good feeling since day one of her stay there. We are looking into the matter further. We are sad and angry and need more answers!!
