Review of Nassau Rehabilitation & Nursing Center

My stepfather was at this facility for two weeks. At 62 he died of a heart attack while at the facility. To say that his care was subpart would be an understatement. Sometimes the place smelled so bad that my three year old granddaughter made a comment. My stepfather was left paralyzed and with no sensation from the waist down. The only way to know he was soiled was by the smell. He would spend hours asking someone to clean him. On his last day of life one of the aides told him he should get room freshener because the room smelled. He told her it was because he could not get anyone to clean him and she told him not to be cheap - that the freshener was only 99 cents. This man who worked 43 years and never accepted anything from anyone was humiliated. My mom had to go to the hospital because the food was not edible and all complaints about the food and care went on deaf ears. On the day he died I was on my way to tour another facility. When the doctor called to tell me my stepfather had died these were her exact words: "Ms Abrams, Lopez was in rehab but he collapsed. We called 911 but he didn't make it. ". I was driving with my 3 year old grandmother and my mother (his wife of 45 years). I had to act as if nothing happened until I was able to get them home so that I could tell her at home with other family present. This doctor's insensitivity was cruel. If you have a loved one, do not put them in this place. Its not only that they are short staffed, its that they just don't care. No human should have to bear the indignities of these people who call themselves professionals. By the way, other patients who I spoke with had the exact same complaints. Its saddens me that my stepfather's last morning on this earth was in the company of these animals.
