My mother is in facility and is not being cared for properly, she is not showered on a regular basic, she has alzheimers and dementia and needs assistance for daily routine care i.e showering, brushing teeth and hair. She was on hospice because she was not showering to the point of urinary tract infections, when I asked the staff, they tell me "her rights have to be respected" so a young medical person asks a dementia patient if she wants to shower, she states no over weeks at a time, and they simply pass her by. The other day I went into the facility to find her at 10:30 in the morning in a soiled bed, dirty hair, nails 1/2 long past the ends of her fingers, her room dirty (under bed, weeks of plaster from the damaged wall) I go to the nurses stations, where I find three staff at the desk, I asked them to check when the last time she had a shower (this is tuesday) and they checked her chart and staed to me, "Monday", I told them to come do a "Sniff test", stating she would probably fail! They reluctanly agreed to shower her. There is a huge difference between respecting the patients rights and criminal neglect. No showers, no eating, no basic care "if the patient doesn't want to" is lazy people who don't care.
