Review of Newark Care and Rehabilitation

4 Star User Review

I would give Kindred 5 stars, were it not for a few relatively minor problems I had there (though a couple of them did not seem minor at the time!). Overall, the staff was very supportive, caring, and personable. I know for sure that my stay there was extremely beneficial to my recovery from back surgery. Key words regarding the staff there? Kind, caring, compassionate, sensitive, supportive, responsive. In short, I got, for the most part, the care and recovery assistance I needed so badly.

I consider that the food there was better than average for institutional cuisine. I appreciated the fact that I had choices, and most of the time, it was pretty decent, really.

The physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were also terrific, listening to my running commentary and helping me find resolutions to any problems that came up. Very helpful, very supportive.

The problems?

• The biggest one: A couple times, I had trouble getting my pain meds when I really needed them. In one case, I had to wait nearly two hours past the time when I was supposed to have had them, and that was an excruciating and difficult experience.

• I was not given the chance to shower quite as often as I would have liked. I am used to showering daily, and, while I understand that that is not possible to support in a place like this, it was a little difficult to adjust to only twice a week.

• My room was reasonably comfortable, though hospital beds being what they are…

• Sanitation and housekeeping could have been a little more proactive. Several times, my urinal was left standing by the sink for hours before being emptied and cleaned out. My bed was made only a couple times, which surprised me a little.

That said, any time I mentioned a problem I was having, the staff was very responsive and supportive about fixing it, or at least trying to. Some things, I understand, they just have no control over; but where they did, they did their best to work with me and help me in any way they could.
