Recently, I spent two and a half weeks at the Country Villa Laguna Hills Healthcare Center (December 3-21, 2011). There were about six people who performed professionally.
I wish I could say the same for the rest of the staff. I quickly learned that if I rang the buzzer at night, there would be a 15 to 30-minute wait, even though my room was directly across from the nurses’ station.
The staff often did not listen, and sometimes complained about being overburdened. One of the persons gave me the wrong meds twice. Fortunately, I always asked what each pill was for. The Physical Therapy/OT program was good. However, their scheduling coordinated poorly with my IV schedule. They came in every day at the same time and would have to return later due to my IV. This could have been corrected so easily; but was not.
As a diabetic, I was given a “regular” menu. The food was less than desirable. (I averaged a pound a day of weight loss during my stay there). They were severely deficient in meeting my dietary needs.
In their quest to provide a clean environment, they forgot to respect my needs for comfort. I was removed from my room on a cleaning day and left alone to just sit for several hours in an empty room with no TV, no reading materials or any items of personal comfort. My broken bed was not taken care of for 2 days. As a result, I suffered neck pain for many days.
My concern is: who advocates for those who have no voice? I can’t imagine being at Country Villas without an advocate 24/7. Few people took the time to care.
