Emeritus is an excellent example of why health care should not be a for profit enterprise. The bottom line is "the" motivation behind this corporation. The actions of its employees, their presumed incompetence, or the mercy of being labeled a mistake are distractions. In fact, the profit motive is alive and well in Arizona. Residents pay $3600 per month for a small room and far from adequate care. Its facilities are often understaffed, except during inspections in which full staffing is represented until the inspectors leave. One Emeritus dropped its staff by 25% on the same day the inspectors returned to headquarters. There have been many occasions when there are no professional nurses, and when the can hire a nurse, she doesn't last long because the pace is incredible for one person. The last nurse only remained in her position for two weeks before resigning. It's very difficult to keep employees. A past Director is suing Emeritus for harrassing her until her resignation. The harrassment was alleged to be part of a larger conspiracy to remove her because of her complaints about inefficiencies, collapse of order, and executive conniving to cut costs and deceive patients and the government.
