Unexpected disapointment.

My mother was recently transferred to Rydal Park for rehabilitation services after a fall. For a facility that has such a high rating, my family and I could not have been more disappointed.
Upon admission, my mom was taken to her room where we waited 20 minutes for a staff member to come in. It turned out the worker was only delivering a menu for her evening meal and it was another 15 minutes until a nurse arrived.
During the course of her few day stay, she was left on a bedpan for 40 minutes, a toilet for 20 minutes and another 40 minutes for someone to answer her call bell to the nurses station. Wheeling her back from PT, an aide told my mother she was leaving her in the wheelchair because dinner was in 1/2 hour. In actuality, dinner wasn't for 1 1/2 hours, the aide just didn't want to be bothered putting my mother back in her bed only to have her help her out of it again. I had that aide removed from any future contact with my mother.
Nurses, PT and OT workers seems kind and gentle but there are not enough nurses. The aides are beyond pathetic. Staff is minimal during the week but almost nonexistent on weekends. Only two RN's cover one large floor on weekends, medications are late being delivered and you can see many call bells lit outside of patient rooms. The care of nurses is good but there are just too few of them. A nurse I spoke with said, "I'm not looking for a pay raise, just more help."
Please reconsider placement of your loved one at another facility. Rydal Park falls short on many levels.

I have to say the complete disappointment my family felt after my parent's brief stay at Rydal Park. While absolutely beautiful we found the care to be below average. There are several excellent therapists on staff-Speech and Respiratory in particular. The Nursing Staff is under-staffed and invisible. There were several hardworking CNA's and several extremely rude and nasty ones.
We left everyday in fear for my parent's care. Saw one patient lying on his floor for an hour. Senior staff care when they check you in but then make you feel like you are an intrusion to them for asking for health updates. The doctors associated were disappointing as well. Please look elsewhere.

simply the worst, starting with mr. heneghan who is a liar from word one.
place is magnificent but that is for show.
you cannot get the truth from anyone there when a loved one is ill.
they tell you one thing and it is another. they show no respect, they are just out for the almighty $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
they do not return phone calls when you ask "why"

HORRIBLE….the place is beautiful…granite counters, beautiful decor but the care is horrible. They are understaffed, and the administration and nursing supervisors are incompetent. "professional staff" showed up for a patient care conference and were unprepared. They did not have the lastest information, we had to tell them what was going on. We asked the dietitian how many calories our family member should consume a day and she said she didn't know, she didn't have the chart with her. When we tried to clarify if our family member was taking a certain medication we got different answers from different nurses on the same day. Please don't be deceived by the fancy decor.

While the independent living situation is excellent, the skilled nursing department seems to be from a third world country (living at the Ritz!). All time and effort was spent on physical appearance. From the insanity of the great distance from the original buildings (many patients have visiting spouses who need to walk over), to the lack of training of the staff, to basic human indignities such as infrequent showering and no fresh fruit on the menu, this is a facility NOT to use. Unfortunately, when one signs up for continuing care, and there is an emergency, there is no choice. Don't let appearances fool you. There is no substance behind this Hollywood front.

Although the staff is friendly, they seem to be neglectful. My parent's room in assisted living is always overflowing with trash and dirty laundry. There is supposed to be a weekly cleaning by staff, but it does not seem to be the case. In addition to the above-mentioned problems, my parent's room never seems to be dusted, only vacuumed.
When my parent lived in the independent living part of Rydal Park, the maid service was much better. Perhaps the cleaning service employees on the assisted living floor are simply not as caring as those on the independent floors. It is a shame, as I think basic and thorough cleaning of a room can and should be done every week. I have taken it upon myself to get rid of trash and to clean the back of the toilet seat.
The operative phrase is 'benign neglect' if you live in assisted living at Rydal Park.

Well, you should see it now! The newly renovated portion is so comfortable, every room is a single, and the floors are wood and carpet -- no linoleum. My father was there for short-term rehab and he loved it. We were happy with all CNAs, nurses and therapists.

Just don't get sick if you live here.

I wish there was a rating of less than one star. Rydal Park Inpatient facility is old and rundown and we had an overall terrible experience. It is a very institutionalized atmosphere. There is an unbelieveable lack of communication with the staff and admistration. When you are admitted you are given no information as the the daily routine and services and it is more than difficult to get answer to any questions. And God help the poor patient that does not have family to handle the daily problems that you WILL encounter.. While there were a few good nurses and assistants, the majority of the staff did not appear to care about the patients or their therapy. Our family is currently dealing with another rehab facility now and the different is night and day. We truly did not realized how bad Rydal Park was until we saw what a rehab center SHOULD be.
