Review of Seaside Hhc @ Atlantic Shore

My grandfather fell in October of last year and required a rehab facility for the hairline fractures in his pelvis. As an RN working within the Sentara system, I heard horror stories about many of the nursing homes in the area. As we all know the hospital does everything but push you out the door when the initial treatment is over. Seaside at Atlantic Shores was literally the only option we had, not due to money (my family is very well off) but due to bed availability. All I can say is that I'm so thankful I work nights at a hospital just two miles down the road from this dump! The staff are HORRIBLE! They do NOT care about you, your family member or any concerns you have. I went there everyday to feed, bathe and dress my grandfather for the simple fact that I did not trust anyone that works there. My grandfather had a foley catheter in the first two weeks there. They NEVER cleaned the tubing and after the second day there I looked and the tubing was filthy! They couldn't be bothered to even attempt to prevent a UTI. I would arrive and his bed alarm was not on and the one time it was on, I could hear the alarm going off as I walked in the front door only to find my grandfather getting out of bed and yet NO staff present. When I questioned one of the staff she looked at me like she could care less. I asked to speak with the charge nurse and she was of NO help whatsoever. I was cutting into her time to run up to Hardee's for breakfast. I can see why she works in that place because she does not have the brain cells to work in a reputable facility….apparently they allow anyone to pass the nursing boards just to have a warm body with a license. The manager is worthless as well. I can't begin to tell you the hell my family and I endured for the two months my grandfather was there. Thankfully when I went to work at night my husband stayed with my grandfather until the private sitter arrived. That's right I had to pay an extra $1,000 a month to have a sitter at night simply for peace of mind, to help him to the bathroom if needed, ect…things the staff there should be doing! I feel bad for anyone who has to place their loved ones or worst enemy in this place, especially if they don't have a medical background like I do or the schedule to stop by every morning. This place needs to be shut down! At the desk there is a binder with violations that Joint Comission has found during inspection. I suggest you take a gander and then ask management why they still employ nurses that give blood pressure and other cardiac medications without taking vital signs first. This is listed as an infraction in the binder! I was never so happy as the day he came home. As a nurse I am appalled that these issues are present and yet not remedied by the management. DO NOT EVEN CONTEMPLATE sending a family member here. The only positive were the physical therapy staff, mainly Vera.
