I can't say enough good things about the Rehab staff. Each and every one of them were wonderful, kind, caring, professional, concerned, interested. They truly had the patient's best interests at heart.
However, as far as the nursing staff goes, it's an embarrassment to the profession. When a patient says "I fear retribution if I speak up" or complains of back pain and the caregiver responds with "Well, my back hurts, too", it speaks volumes of the facility as a whole. Suffice it to say we found many opportunities for improvement. I sincerely hope my concerns have not fallen on deaf ears.
At one point, the staff scheduled a (mandated) discharge planning meeting that I would be attending remotely as I live out of town. They all NO SHOWED for the meeting. Family called in, concerned that something must have happened. Nope. We were told it would be rescheduled and that never happened either. They never returned our phone call. Ever. This was a HUGE red flag. Things did not improve when I was there in person.
Take a peak at the white boards in the rooms. See if the postings are up-to-date. Note if the information posted - date/day/shift/caregivers - is accurate. Is the room clean? Is the access to the bathroom blocked by a guest chair or wheelchair? Do the staff make eye contact and greet you when you come in? These are good indicators that should not be overlooked.
