Review of Durham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

My mother was placed at Grace in late June. A family member brought her clothes and left them with her without any instruction to label them or anything. I live across the country, so it took me a few weeks to get there. When I arrived two weeks later, 80 pieces out of 120 were missing. A few of the nursing staff did their best to help, but the administration told me they are not responsible for lost and stolen articles. This is absolutely egregious and disrespectful. Grace should have a system in place to prevent this kind of theft from happening. I also arrived to find my Mother slumped in a wheelchair with no less than 10 other residents in the same situation all arranged around the central nursing station. My mother was unkempt and completely out of it. SHe arrived there able to walk and get to the bathroom herself and within two weeks could not walk or get up to go to the bathroom without assistance. When we met to discuss her care plan, her records that were being discussed described a person that I did not see the entire week I was there. The records indicated she was able to eat on her own and was interacting with the therapy staff. The week I was there, she required assistance to eat and was not capable of interacting with anyone. She died one month after arriving. Her bed constantly smelled of urine, although they did change the bedding daily. Absolutely unacceptable and disrespectful care of their residents and the families that care for them! While there are a few shining stars there, the administration is terrible and the place is not run in a manner that anyone would want their loved ones in. The fact that this is a privately owned, for profit facility that takes government money is highly questionable.
