My husband was at Kindred for about three months before transferring to a facility closer to home. (The proximity to home was the only reason for the transfer.)The Kindred facility is an older one and the room my husband was in could have used a paint job, but that was not an issue for me. The entire facility is kept very clean.
Residents have the choice of eating their meals in the dining room or in their own rooms. We ate in the dining room, which was pleasant and always with white table cloths and a decorative centerpiece on each table. The meal portions were generous, with quite a variety of menus and above average for institutional food.
Our experience with the all the staff was a positive one. They are a caring and compassionate team. And very hard working, I might add. I believe "the powers that be" should, especially in the area of patient care, hire additional staffing, so that the ratio between the residents and the caregivers is more equitable. However, I understand that this is a common need in many healthcare facilities.
I appreciated the efforts of the rehabilitation staff on behalf of my husband. He came to Kindred on a feeding tube and was on a regular diet when he left. Great care was taken to make sure he progressed only as he was able, which required diligent oversight. He is not ambulatory, though efforts were made to see if he would progress in this area. When it was determined that this would not happen, he was fitted with a special wheelchair that was "tailor made" to his particular needs.
There are a variety of interesting activities throughout the week that provide opportunities for social interaction. Also, the spiritual needs of the residents are addressed, with various groups coming in for services or musical presentations. This was a particular blessing for me, as a family member.
In closing, I appreciate Kindred and would not hesitate to recommend it to someone considering placement there.
