Novato Health Care Center (new name, same folks) is Novato's only skilled nursing home that includes patients with Dementia and Alzheimer's. NHCC's greatest asset is the people that work there. From the staff to the CNA's, nurses and doctors there is a level of compassion and integrity that makes a huge difference in the life of the person living with dementia.
When my Mom first arrived it was very difficult for me to see her in a SNF on a dementia ward. As the days and weeks progressed and I got to know the nurses and, I was more and more impressed. Medication for dementia patients is a complex issue. NHCC uses Care Conferences to assign specialists to manage and monitor the needs of each patient. The nurse practitioner medication specialist was wonderful. She was willing to work with me until we could find medication that would allow the highest degree of functioning with the fewest side effects. The physicians, nurses, CNA's and staff are also wonderful. They respect the patients and their family's wishes.
It isn't easy seeing a loved one experience the later stages of Dementia and Alzheimer's let alone placing them in a facility. If you take the time to get to know the people at NHCC I believe you will find kindness, support and compassion.
