I would have wanted to know how understaffed they were and that they were a training facility. My relative was allowed to lay in feces and urine for about an hour because one nursing assistant could not find anyone to help him. This happened several times. It took too long for staff to answer patient's call bell. My relative developed bed sores for lack of being turned enough. The physical therapists and speech therapist did a great job!

It most certainly true that residents are left unattended for long periods of time. My mother cannot get herself off the toilet, and has had to wait for as long as 25 mins. before someone would help her. Her roommate corroborates this. Columbia Lutheran is very understaffed, and for the incredible amount of money they charge ($7,000/mo.) they should do better. Also, most of the aides are men, and my mother hates having a man help her in the bathroom. I would, too. The food is terrible. I think we will be moving her to another facility soon.
I work as a nursing assistant and I understand that it can be frustrating for the residents and for family members when the call lights are not answered immediately.
This is usually because the staff are busy with another resident. In most nursing facilities there are no less than 5-8 residents per nursing assistant, although the normal is more like 12 residents per nursing assistant. They are expected to do everything for the resident, from bathing, toileting, feeding, hair brushing, teeth cleaning even pouring a glass of water for residents, and if they are called in to assist with another resident, the nurse has asked the N A to do something else, or they might be on a break. (Nursing assistants are allowed to take breaks). Never in all the years I have worked as a Nursing Assistant has any call light been unanswered for an hour. Some family members need a little patience, although most family members are very understanding and realize it might take a little while.
In the facility that I work in most residents come to us from elsewhere with pressure sores. I do know that Columbia Lutheran Home has an excellent treatment nurse and very rarely has pressure ulcers been the result of poor care while in this facility.
