  • Remarkable Healthcare of Seguin Seguin, Texas 78155

My mother is currently in Remarkable. The care itself has been very uneven since she arrived there almost two months ago. She was first admitted into skilled nursing then moved to long-term care after about a month.

Her first few days at Remarkable showed noticeable improvement. The aides have always been very inconsistent with her care leaving her head down lower than the 30 degrees elevation that she needs to avoid breathing problems and fluid collecting in her throat. They leave the lights shining in her face or leave her in the dark at night on a regular basis. The room tends to be stuffy as they turn off the fan. My mother becomes overheated very easily. Frequently, her bed is saturated with sweat due to the lack of air circulation in the room.

But these are mild problems compared to the flat-out irresponsible care by some nurses and the Physician Assistant, Desiree Fain. My mother has been subject to constipation during her entire adult lifetime. She is now 91. She is laxative dependent. My mother was taken off of laxatives that had been given on a regular basis at her previous locations. My mother's stomach became bloated due to the inevitable constipation that set in within a short time. I pleaded with the night nurse named Katie to inform the doctor of my mother's condition. Katie led me to believe that she was keeping the doctor informed, a Robert C. Treadwell, D.O. During this time, Katie repeatedly said that my mother was having normal bowel movements and there was nothing in the medical record about her being on laxatives. Finally, a different nurse came on duty who recognized the problem and promptly administered laxatives and a suppository producing results.

Then even more incredibly they resumed pulling back the laxatives a few days later with the predictable results. I asked the day nurse about Katie's claim that she had informed the doctor only to be told that there was no record of any such communication. I asked if she could contact the doctor and he responded promptly by authorizing the use of laxatives. This pattern kept repeating over and over. Finally, they seem to have caught on, but my mother had to suffer unnecessarily and my mother was unable to participate in therapy due to her condition.

Ms. Fain wrote in my mother's medical record that I was "obsessed" with my mother's constipation. Of course I was and still am because I know my mother's history and I have seen her face death twice this year due to blockages in her digestive tract. This comment shows, at best, a complete lack of medical understanding. Ms. Fain has repeatedly pulled back my mother's laxatives because my mother's bowel movements were not solid. Due to my mother's condition, this is inevitable.

During this time, my mother's digestive tract became backed up that she started vomiting so violently that the vomit shot out of my mother's mouth landing several feet away from her bed. I called Ms. Fain the next day to discuss the matter and she denied that my mother had vomited at all. She was defensive from the start of our conversation and then hung up on me when I asked her what could have caused the projectile vomiting other than a back-up in my mother's digestive tract. Apparently, the nurse did make a note of the vomiting, but Ms.Fain failed to notice that note in the record. There is no question about my mother's vomiting. It was witnessed by another nurse and two aides.

There is more…About a month ago, I was suddenly confronted by a nurse as I entered the facility to visit my mother demanding that I leave immediately. I was threatened with police action if I did not leave that minute. I was told that I had been warned that my visiting hours had been changed and that I chose to disregard that warning. I never received any such warning. I did not receive an explanation as to the change. I was just forced out upsetting both my mother and me.

The same thing happened the next night when my mother was in the throes of an anxiety attack. A nurse named Misty came into the room and spoke to me in very abrupt terms ordering me out as my mother writhed in agony. I told the nurse that she was evil. In fact, this entire facility is mired in the utmost darkness.

Days later in a meeting with the owner, Jon McPike, the social worker, Wendy Vanatko, the Nursing Director, Jessica Anderson, and other members of the staff, I was subjected to bizarre charges that suggested sexual impropriety with my mother. Mr. McPike denied that implication, but that suggestion was present and I took it as a threat to attempt to head off complaints about my mother's care such as I am writing now. The other charges were demonstrably false. They accused me of "abusive language" because I dared to describe their lack of proper medication for my mother's digestive problems as "stupid" and "idiotic" when aides asked me why my mother's stomach was so bloated. I never directed my blunt and accurate descriptions to those guilty of negligence, viz. Katie and Desiree Fain. Mr. McPike brought up his professional ties with my state senator further attempting to discourage me from taking action against his facility for negligence, or worse.

There are more problems, but to abbreviate this review, I shall come to the current major trouble that we are having with Jon McPike. Twice in the past couple of weeks, I have attempted to move my mother to another facility. Twice I have been blocked. The first time, the social worker, Wendy Vanatko, repeated the charges I recounted above to the Admissions rep from the other facility. Upon hearing her lies, he declined to accept my mother. Then I found another facility this past week. The Remarkable staff then prevailed on Dr. Treadwell to deny my mother's discharge from Remarkable on the dubious claim that the other facility could not adequately care for my mother. As I attempted this move, Mr. McPike wrote me an email claiming that I owned him over $16,000 (far in excess of what I agreed to pay) for my mother's care and if I did not pay him, he would go to court and take my mother away from me.

Think long and hard about moving your loved one into this facility. It is clean and looks nice on the outside, but it is consumed in the power and greed of a demonic or deluded owner.

I feel that the nursing don't really care what happens to these elderly men and women. I feel that they think they are all going to dye anyway. But in reality they are our parents. I feel that they don't take things serious enough when something happens. They ignore the lights that go on in the hall ways. I feel they don't respond quick enough when something happens. I have such a low self imagine of most of the nurses there. I feel some of the CNA care more for these people.

I had an elderly parent staying at Silvertree recently. Staffing is inadequate: my elderly parent suffered two unexplained injuries while at Silvertree due to lack of supervision. Staff members are frequently surly and combative, quite likely due to being overworked because of the inadequate staffing. Staff was often unable to tell me what medications, and in what dosages, my parent had been given that particular day. I saw my parent's roommate activate the nurse's call button and then wait over 20 minutes for a response. The quality of the rehabilitation department is questionable and I strongly suspect they care much more about their monetary compensation than their mission to return patients to a high level of physical activity. The food, no surprise, was not particularly good, but I witnessed the residents often having to wait in the dining room for about an hour before being served. My recommendation is to find a different facility for your loved one either for nursing home care or even rehab needs. Silvertree does not seem to be a high quality facility, despite what their representatives may tell you.

Some nursing homes are bad and some are good but none are perfect. When I put my beloved grandma in the nursing home I felt very guilty and was very angry that I wasn't able take care of her at home myself. I want my grandma to have the best so if it wasn't perfect when I visit her I'd raise heck with everyone there. After going to therapy, I learned my anger and guilt was misplaced. When I accepted the reality of the situation and started talking to the right people things improved. Its better to be part of the solution than part of the problem. I love my grandma and I do know if I suspected she was ever mistreated or exploited at this location or any other nursing home I would not leave her there and complian…I'd move her to a safe place fast!

This place nearly let my mother die. The staff does not have answers to basic questions. I do not know who rated this Nursing Home a three star but the State recommended we remove my mother or she would die while under the care of the staff at Siver Tree. In two years they have had a number of staff changes at all levels, that was the first alert and now we are investigating if Siver Tree was taking unauthorized funds out of my mothers trust fund account. BEWARE!!!!!
