Review of Life Care Center of Blount County

Do not use this facility. As others state it is a beautiful, clean facility but the care is awful. My father was admitted on 2/2/19 from PNC (a wonderful facility for a higher level of care in Knoxville). On 2/3/19 in the evening I called to check on him and was told he fell but was okay. No one contacted us. My father had a small brain bleed in November and one in December which is why he was at PNC and why he was now in rehab here. Family visited him on approximately the 3rd, 5th and 7th and he appeared unchanged but very tired and doubled over in wheelchair. I contacted the unit nursing manager on the 8th and was told this was due to the intense therapy and they got very tired, etc. She told me he was complaining that his wright wrist hurt but it looked okay. She was ordering an x-ray to be sure. I arrived at the facility on the 8th mid-afternoon. When I arrived I was told by the ladies at the nursing station that he had another fall but there was no documentation and they didn't know what happened. I went to his room and he was lethargic, very confused, could not move his head or the entire right side of his body. His eyes were glassed over and his right arm was extremely hot and swollen. They told me they x-rayed his wrist and it was okay, probably just sprained and not moving, etc. was due to the pain. Ultimately I insisted on a transport to UT Medical Center where they determined he had a significant trauma to his head and emergency surgery was required to drill a hole in his head and place a port to drain the blood and relieve the pressure on his brain. After surgery he is currently still very confused and right side is very weak, although he can now wiggle fingers and toes minimally on that side. I do not know how much he will recover with therapy yet. I talked to the unit nursing manager and was told she had investigated and could not find proof of another fall. Further told their PA had assessed him and determined he did not need transport and that was really all she could tell me. They have no answers or charting for the condition I found him in. I asked for other information on escalating the issue and she gave me a name for the head nurse and interim administrator. I left a message for the administrator and she did not call me back. I received a call from a social worker who just wanted to let me know they would look into it further…..I am proceeding with formal complaint with the state. I do not want this to happen to someone else's family member. Had I not arrived on Saturday he would most likely have died from just being left in bed without care. The level of care is unacceptable at minimum. This is elderly abuse and negligence.
