Review of Garnet Hill Rehabilitation and Skilled Care

My mother-in-law was placed at Garnet Hill in Wylie on December 11 to recover from chemotherapy. Other than the cancer and the sores in her mouth and throat, she was in good condition, After one week at Garnet Hill in Wylie, she was dead from kidney failure due to dehydration. They didn't administer her meds on time, only took her vitals when my sister would ask them, administered her meds incorrectly and were unwilling to provide soft foods she would be able to tolerate in her mouth and could swallow. We had to provide Ensure drinks and yogurt because the staff just did not care. When she soiled herself, her CNA told her to clean herself up. My sister had to do it when she came in because Mom couldn't and the staff wouldn't. The staff never faxed any of Mom's labs to her oncologist like they were supposed to do so he could monitor her condition, even after my sister discussed it with them more than once. On December 19th, Mom was transported to her oncologist because her white cell count dropped extremely low. Prior to putting her on the ambulance, staff gave her pain medication, which lowers blood pressure, without taking her vitals. In the ambulance, her blood pressure dropped to 32/13. She was taken to the emergency room at Methodist Richardson where she was diagnosed to kidney failure due to extreme dehydration. She was placed in ICU that night and died the following afternoon. Instead of having the 6 months to a year with her that the oncologist expected, we had little more than a week. There is no doubt that she died due to the lack of care she received at Garnet Hill.
