Review of Dunmore Health Care Center

2 Star User Review

My siblings and I recently found ourselves in a place we never wanted to enter; we could no longer care for our mother, diagnosed with advanced dementia along with a half page list of other medical conditions. We had kept her in her home after our father's passing and would take turns spending the night while she had home health in and out during the day time hours.

We researched numerous nursing home facilities online and from what we read on those, selected our "Top 5" to tour. The Dunmore Health Care Center was at the top of the list. The official website mentioned numerous amenities that pleased us, and what brought this center to the top of our list were the following:

"Front Porch with Rocking Chairs" - there is a very small porch with 2 benches at the entrance to the facility but not a single rocking chair in sight.

"Library and Internet Cafe" - there was no such room and when my sisters and I inquired to its location we were met with blank stares. The woman giving us the tour did point out a good number of books available to borrow on an entertainment center in the "activity room" but was confounded over the "internet cafe" portion.

"Spa with Whirlpool Tub" - this was a huge list topper for us. A spa with a whirlpool tub? Mom would be in her glory! We were directed to a large and very poorly ventilated room that contained 2 shower stalls and yes, in fact, a whirlpool tub. We were then informed that the tub was not available for us. Also, there is no spa.

"Certified Culinary Chef" - my sister, a self-taught and wonderful chef, felt the need to ask about this. We happened to be touring during a meal time (breakfast) and were shown what was being served. A meal prepared by a culinary chef is not what we saw. It was eggs served in a "block", the bottoms of each block appeared gray.

"Over 30 Private Suites with Full Bath" - when I asked how many rooms were in the building I was told 52. Out of those 52, 12, not 30, are private with a full bath. The website also mentions "Semi Private Rooms with Full Bath", these 40 rooms did have a bathroom with a sink and toilet, not a full bath as described.

"Telephone with extensions" - there was not a single telephone located in any room aside from personal cell phones. Those who did have a telephone, had one installed privately. I was lead to believe via the description that each room came equipped with its own phone.

"Flat Screen TVs in Every Room" - this was laughable as after I inquired I was told that it's the family's or resident's responsibility to provide their own television. Furthermore, we would then have to contact the cable provider the facility uses to schedule hook-up.

The staff that we met along the tour were beyond friendly and more importantly, professional. The facility itself is well maintained and clean. Those 2 facts are what bumped the facility to a 2 star rating. If it weren't for the drastic misrepresentation of provided amenities, we would have had Mom admitted as soon as possible; however, my siblings and I have a hard time "forgiving" the blatant misrepresentation of provided services.
