Review of Harnett Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

2 Star User Review

Harnett W. in Dunn NC has a pleasant facade, but the patient rooms are in desparate need of wall repairs & fresh paint. The poor excuse for wall decor in the rooms is a childlike bulletin board with horrible colors for borders & background, nothing resembling soft soothing colors one might find in a pretty picture. Instead, these bboards are Yellow background with a bright border. The patient I know has been moved to more than 2 rooms in less than 6 months and all the rooms have been this way. When staff was asked about room disrepair they brushed off concern with " they will be painting soon." Not seen evidence of paint or other improvements.

Patient has had multiple bed sores. Staff assures they are turning & moving according to guidlines. If this were the case there would not be sores!

Nurses making diagnosis of serious symptoms herself instead of "bothering" doctor to come & look @ their patient.

Staff not using sterile procedures when attending to patient's wounds.

Staff losing patient's clothes. Not just once in while, but 4 gowns & 8 socks in one week. This is a typical scenario, week after week, day after day.

If you take the time to inquire about "missing stuff" some of it will turn up in laundry room in "lost & Found" or in another pile near the washing machine, bleached to a different color & reeking of clorox. In a few days more of patient's clothes reappear in their closet. most likely after going thru laundry room after being worn by another person. THIS IS UNNECESSARY. ALL GARMENTS ARE MARKED WITH PATIENT'S NAME & ROOM NUMER WITH A LAUNDRY PEN.

I could continue, but I hope that this facility will be assisted in making improvements quickly without inconveniencing the residents. My friend that is still at HW will keep me informed of changes, & I will be able to see and smell the difference when I visit. Thank you for attending to this matter quickly.

As a nurse with long term care experience and as someone who has had a family member in this facility, I do feel the need to defend a few of the points made in this review. Sometimes, despite the amount of turning and repositioning done, there are factors that make people more likely to develop wounds. Poor appetite that results in poor intake of food and essential nutrients, poor declining health, and bowel and bladder incontinence are just a few issues that many patients in long term care can have that can and will affect their skin integrity causing them to become more prone to developing wounds. Also, unless specified by a doctor, the vast majority of wound care is not done using sterile technique, but rather clean techinique, which involves good handwashing, a clean pair of gloves from a box, clean unused gauze for cleaning, and clean unused dressing supplies. Things such as sterile gloves and sterile gauze are not used for standard wound care, but for things such as central line dressing changes and foley catheter insertion. As to the laundry issue, I'm sure its aggravating, but I can barely manage to do my laundry without losing a few clothing items, imagine muptiplying that by the 100 residents this facility holds at capacity. I can also say from experience with the staff in this facility, that if you make them aware of missing items, they go above and beyond to replace any lost or damaged items. As to the comments about the cosmetic repairs, the walls do have some scuffs and dings that I have seen repaired there, and I would think that with the patient beds being moved up & down during patient care and all the wheelchairs rolling around that scratches, scuffs, and dings are to be expected. The review also made a reference to the smell, this facility is by far one of the better smelling buildings I've ever been in. Smells are going to happen, its a nursing facility where people, many who are incontinent of bowel and bladder, are living and occasional odors are to be expected and may linger for a bit even after being cleaned up, as I'm sure it does in anybody's home when they go to the bathroom, but its not constant. My family member had nothing but a good experience in this facility and I just felt the need to defend the facility especially given the superficiality of some of the complaints and lack of medical knowledge behind the issues in this review.
