This place is just amazing. The staff were generally very warm and caring. All the top managers of the center made personal visits to my mom each day to check on her well being, and they all knew her by first name. She even knew every one of their first names. They definitely took a personal interest in her. My mother was in terrible shape when she arrived for rehab, and through the daily therapy program, she progressed to the point where he was able to return home. Even the amenities were great - the free phone, tv, and wi-fi were nice. The free transportation to doctor appointments was a life saver. I give this place a 5 star review.

I have to agree My husband was in the facility several times (what was I thinking) The first time on the first floor and treatment was OK. Second time on Second floor and after bringing to the attention of the Head Nurse that my husband's stomach was swelling and that I wanted a Dr to see him, I was told that he would check on him and that He will decide if my husband needs to see a Dr.

I made up my mind at that time that I would call in a Dr, however the very next morning he was in the ER will an infection that filled his stomach. After his Dr did another operation, my husband had to wear a Wound pump for a couple of months. I through that it was the Nurse's fault and not the facility. Second time my husband had to return I insisted that he NEVER go on the second floor. The last time he was in the facility, while in the shower the aide pushed his wheelchair and got it caught in the drain causing my husband to fall to the floor, hurt his knees and back. He did have one or two nurses that were very good, but that is where it ends. Some of the office personel are very nasty and one of them speaks to you like a bully. I will look into another facility for my husband in the future.

They do not deserve one star. My grandmother was in Central Island Healthcare for rehab…..what a huge mistake. She aged 10 years since being there. Each time I saw her she looked worse and worse. They claimed the doctor had seen her and she was fine- she was never checked by the doctor. She had thrush that was never picked up, she had a rash on her back from never being moved, they suspected internal bleeding- but never did anything about it, my grandmother lost 7 pounds in one week- never looked into that. When my mom called the social worker for CI she hung up on her when my mom showed displeasure toward the facility. When my mom demanded a colonoscopy- they continued to push back the appt. Finally, my mom said she wanted in writing that my grandmother would make it to that appt and wouldn't die in their care- they quickly moved my grandmother to Plainview Hospital. Once she is discharged from that hospital she will NEVER go back to CI. I wouldn't send a mouse to that facility. Disgraceful, Horrible these are just a few of the words to descibe this place. If you place a family member in this facility you will loose them.

Mom would have slipped into a coma with a tumor filling her brain and died in this facility, all the while in excruciating pain if I did not get her to an ER when I did, but instead followed their advice to try and "extend" her stay there. Before coming to this facility for 48 days, she went to the ER, admitted for two days and treated by one of this facilities own "prefered" doctors who coincidentally recommended her for rehab at this facility. He examined her at least 20 times. As bizzare as his diagnosis of "bursitis" being so disabling and painful was, he assured me that it could be that painful and disabling. After a few weeks of no improvement, but instead deterioration, I demanded the facility have her brain and spine examined as she had an aggressive brain lymphoma two years earlier, thought to be in remission. I was told she had a neurology consult-and that was it- no follow up, no imaging done. She was sent for a CT scan of the spine which confirmed fractures of the lower lumbar spine.I was relieved-finally something made sense. During the next three weeks,I kept inquiring as to when the fractures would be addressed. I kept getting one lame excuse after another. Meanwhile, she was told that she needed to learn pain tolerance and given continued PT(with a now known condition of a fractured lumbar spine). Mom's mental status declined horribly I insisted, as she began falling asleep while parked in a wheelchair all day- I was ignored as if the ignorant one and told that it was "normal" worsening of dementia. Despite her cries of excruciating pain uncontrolled by opiates, this facilities doctors, nurses and physical therapists lacked the ordinary common sense to get her needed medical care.

The lack of service and poor quality of care provided at Central Island are obviously consistent with those provided at similar for-profit institutions across the US. Beware! Don't ever bring your loved one or even yourself to Central Island!

Many of the staff (including those in the administration) wear phony smiles, but please, don't be fooled by them. All they're interested in doing is the minimum. They do not have the recovery and rehabilitation of the patients entrusted to them on their minds!

You're lucky if you find an RN on a floor housing patients, and when you do, they're rarely eager to help a patient in need. They simply find an excuse to give a family member who is looking for assistance on behalf of a patient.

Those interacting with patients are primarily LPNs (Licensed Practicing Nurses) and not RNs (registered nurses); they are as slow as molasses, not especially caring and have ATTITUDE to boot. Their medical knowledge is limited and they are prone to making serious medical mistakes.

I've given Central Island a one-star rating, but if I could, I'd give them nothing short of a ZERO!
