  • Oneida Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Utica, New York 13501

Staff on third floor skilled do not brush my loved ones teeth. With his dementia he cannot do this for himself. I have asked them repeatedly to do this for him but they still do not. They do not seem to understand how important good dental care is to a person's overall health and how traumatic the experience will be if he needs major dental work done.

The skilled nursing floor is deficient in giving personal care to residents who cannot care for themselves. My loved one needs his teeth brushed as he can no longer do that. They do not brush his teeth. I have made complaints to them and Dept. of Health. I have shown a CNA how I do it and she said she would not that she knows he can. She said other CNA's said he spits so they didn't do it. He has never spit for me. It might be there approach. They are always chatting amongst themselves when giving care instead of the resident. They allow my loved one to use his hands to eat and will not let me help. He can but needs prompts. I have voiced my concerns to them and state but still it continues.

If I could give it less than a star I would. Some CNA's and nurses are good but in general they provide the least amount of care possible to quiet people. The scariest part is many of the patients cannot advocate for themselves. My mother was a long time resident and needed to see a specialist outside of the facility to help manage pain that prohibited daily function. For more than a year they would not send her and cited multiple reasons as to why they couldn't get her to a specialist. In addition they spent $500 out of her personal account to purchase clothes (which she did not need as we had brand new clothes for her already). No one authorized this purchase and when asked about how it happened, their apology was that they fired the lady working in the business office and that it would not happen again. They would not and have not returned the $500. Often my mom was sent out of the facility for appointments without anyone in the family being notified, once even to have a cyst removed surgically from her face. Despite notes on her chart to inform family and discussions with social workers, this was a constant problem. Communication is very lacking. They are often understaffed and will use that as an excuse to not get things done. I have since moved my mother to another nursing home facility and have been much more pleased with the level of care, compassion, cleanliness, communication, and respect.

I will not post what I seen at this nursing home today or the people that I met. Reason being I would not like to read about such things if a loved one of mine were staying here. Let it suffice to say that if at all possible do not place your loved one here. Impossible for me to be detailed and specific, All I am saying is go see for yourself if you doubt this review.

I visit a friend here. He does not seem to get the care he needs. He complained of a toothache for 10 days before he saw a dentist. They told him they had to arrange transportation. He needs treatment for limphodima but has to wrap his limbs himself, and he needs PT for treatment.

I have been there during dinner and the food was cold. The staff is always cheerful , and the halls look clean.

In January, 2012 we were able to admit our mom to the skilled nursing unit on the third floor. While she seems to be doing well I have concerns about the cleanliness and the sanitary nature of the floors, especially the rest rooms. I strongly feel that alll the doors and door handles should be sanitized daily. There should be a bottle of anti-bacterial had soap on the sink not the dispenser as mom does not know how that works. The chairs that are in the sitting areas smell like urine and should be disinfected daily. All this is to prevent further infections to the patients and visitors, NO IF ANDS OR BUTS about it!!! If you want to be a five star unit. My older relatives that visit mom complain constantly about the area of town it is located.in. I Think that if you want to avoid any catrastophy that will be a costly event for the owners you must get some ARMED SECURITY GUARDS out in front to avoid an attack and robbery. I think cutting corners there was a HUGE mistake. I call constantly to be sure they assist mom with her hygene as she has always been a women of great pride in her appearance and dress. Our family wants to have her transferred to another facility, but I dont feel that moving her is the right thing to do at this point, but will for the safety of her and the family. As for the staff, I have met pretty much all of them and they are all AMAZING and should be compensated for going above and beyond their duties. If you again want to be A FIVE STAR FACILITY take care of your employees and the reward to you will be 100 fold. Thank you for your time and sincerely hope you address these issues PROMPTLY!!!!!

The Center is nothing but a great physical therapy group one has to stay in HELL to take advantage of, as there is no out patient theapy. No linen, no decent food, nobody comes for 20 minutes, if they come at all, when you ring the bell. I had to actually get on the phone and call the front desk to ask for a bed pan…of course the nurse yelled at me. She said I was lucky they came at all, as it was only her and 2 aides for 40 people. The aides, most of them, are nice, but the mean ones at night make the place feel more like a Stephan King novel then a "health center"…LOL Some health center, wish you could see it, you'd know what I mean. I got out of there about a month ago, and I am still having nightmares…and I mean real nightmares. They deprived me of oxygen so many times…each time I had to call 911 who came to my rescue. It was told to me I'm not the only one who had that problem…again, it goes back to lack of help who really cares. I mean, in a Nursing Home/Rehab facility, wouldn't you expect them to have enough sheets and hospital gowns? They run out often…I had to wear the same gown for 3 days and staff was trying to put one of my dresses on another lady who said she didn't want to wear my dress and she knew it was mine as she had seen me in it! What if I had gone into PT and seen her in it? What if she couldn't talk to say anything? I wouldn't trust them with my little dog! My room mate kept asking to be sent to the Hospital as she was throwing up and couldn't keep anything down for a week…they would not let her go, talking her out of it each time…I called over the curtain that if she wanted to go to the hospital, it was her right. I was told to shut up and mind my own business…finally they let her go and a couple weeks later I heard she needed to get to the hospital sooner, and she died. She was only 49. Guess you get the idea about this "Center of Health"..they don't even cover you after they help you with the bed pan. I'll add more when I get the chance…but there must be better places. Facility is Disassocating it's self from the unpopular name "STONEHEDGE", insisting it be called it's new name:

Rome Center for Rehabilitation and Health Care, still located at 801 James Street, Rome, NY.

Here's a hint and some good advice - They do have an awesome rehab area - but come as an out patient…nobody should have to endure these horrendous, uncaring, filthy conditions. Many here are unable to talk, so I will be their voice. Keeping this in mind, the night nurses and last night even a supervisor, insisted I sleep on linen that became urine soaked while using the bedpan…of course I refused, as to have done so would have left me with raw skin by morning. Staff is really nice, but you can see they are over worked and under paid. The food is all from cans and Chef Ramsey would throw up on it. I am told a new person just bought the place a few weeks ago…still, there seems to be a lack of knowledge of oxygen use, since I have only been here a week and a half, and have alredy had to call 911 twice and they ran me to the ER at the Rome hospital….each time it was that I hadn't been given enough oxygen. I'll keep you posted how things go, as I'll be here awhile. I have to call the health dept. Monday, as they told the hospital they had a working Bi-Pap for me, and it hasn't worked one night! Also had to be taken to the hospital the other day (again) with side affects from not using the bi-pap. FYI- a bi-pap works while you are sleeping, to get rid of the dangerous gases left in our body from breathing.Again today I had to call all over on my phone, as the bells here get ignored. The first time I had to pee and poop- I almost didn't make it, as it took me an entire hour to get a nurse to help me.Then, in the afternnon it was oxygen I was out of!! Hows THAT for a scare?? To be without oxygen, bedridden, and nobody will come help you?

saw resident physician once in 6 weeks; personal clothing moved to another room when first roommate was moved; was given meds without food that was required to be given with food; compatible roommate moved and replaced with incompatible roommate who made my business and should have been in a room alone given her needs 24 hours a day; was lied to about the need to change roommates; poor staffing response when needed, took a long time for anyone to answer the calls. Pt was good.

this nursing home is horrible. When I arrived to visit my grandmother she was soaked in urine in her wheel chair. It was bad, it was dripping from her wheel chair and had formed a puddle on the floor. No one could give a direct answer as to when she was last taken to the bathroom since she can no longer do it on her own. the care is horrible and the nurse's seem to lie to cover up things.
