Review of Hilaire Rehab & Nursing

1 Star User Review

This place was absolutely awful. They keep the patients doped up and herded in the hallways. They are terribly understaffed and the patients are often unattended (even in the hallway). The once-in-a-while doctors there are simply terrible, with bad bedside manners, and they constantly misdiagnose or underdiagnose patients. During my mother's stay I encountered family members of five different patients who were fighting with the staff about the critically bad care. On our first day there, one woman was screaming that her mother was neglected and that she ended up with pneumonia that wasn't being taken care of. That should have been a red flag for us. Another patient was complaining of fatigue and her son kept asking for her to get a blood test, which they didn't do, and by the time the patient was sent to the hospital because she passed out, it turned out she had dangerously low blood level from internal bleeding from blood thinners the staff wasn't keeping track of. Most patients who seem to take up the time of the staff are given medication to knock them out and keep them quiet. One patient was regressing so bad that her daughter was crying and screaming to the nursing supervisor who is completely inept, in the hallway, complaining about her mother's care, saying she'd rather have her mother in hospice than here. The food isn't good, and if a patient needs help eating, they don't always get that help. If a patient needs something or has to go to the bathroom, they can wait forever. There are literally times when noone is at the nursing desk. The staff seems very unhappy and overworked, you rarely see a smiling nurse. They talk disparagingly about the patients in front of them, and some patients are left half-dressed in the hallway, without any dignity. In my case, I know that they were completely responsible for my mother's near-death decline, which was almost immediately corrected by a change of venue and being seen by qualified and caring doctors and staff. Don't be swayed by the bed-and-breakfasty appearance of the lobby. Especially if you are looking for a place where you will not be visiting much, forget HELLaire.

I agree with you 100% Wish I had read this review BEFORE we let Huntington Hospital put our mother here. Sadly, its all about money - insurance was accepted here so we had to agree. Our mother suffered dreadfully at the hands of Bob Heppenheimer and his understaffed staff. Miserable place.

You are grossly misguided. Hilaire is a hellhole

The review of Feb.13,2012 is right on the money. My son has lived in Hellaire for 10 years. The old owners Mike cared, the new owner Lamda for three years terrible. We have our son home now. Six years at Hellaire he was treated for a Urinary infection with Cipro. My doctors, he had a bladder stone which was removed. At the hospital 19 pills a day. At home 3 pills a day and no anxiety of anti depressants. No one can say anything about this hole. I have all paperwork to prove medical neglect. Those who approve of Hellaire are probably the greedy owners

I am writing in reference to the review of this facility that was posted on February 13, 2012. After careful examination of this review I have come to question some of the comments that were made.

I understand that every person is entitled to an opinion and I do not wish to infringe on anyone's rights. However, nowhere in the evaluation does it make reference to the reviewer's medical credentials and yet they make accusations that should only be made by a qualified professional.

The most brazen comment is that "patients who seem to take up the time of the staff are given medication to knock them out and keep them quiet". Not only is this remark irresponsible but it should only be made by someone who has access to the patients' records.

Another accusation is that our facility is understaffed. Yet in the review by The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, published on your website, the record shows Hilaire is equal to or better than the New York State and national averages.

There certainly are other items in the review that could also be red flagged because of their prejudicial nature. But as I made clear earlier, it is not my desire to censor anyone. However in the name of fairness I believe that this review is unfair, unfounded and unwarranted.

I would like to take the time to respond to this disturbing review posted on the site.

I currently have my mom at the facility. I can attest to the fact that the above review is totally inaccurate. Although I believe there is no "perfect facility" to place your loved one, I can state that this facility is fantastic in both resident care and medical treatment of the residents. The reputation in the community is outstanding. I know this because I live in the community myself.

The administrative team is available, on a daily basis, family members to ask questions or bring any concerns to them. They assure that our concerns are addressed immediately. In addition, and offer the opportunity for the family to meet with the care planning team, whenever needed or requested.

The staff are pleasant, caring, and helpful. They always go above and beyond the call of duty, to assure that proper patient care is delivered to everyone. In my opinion, I believe this is Hilaire's biggest attribute.

While spending time with my mother at the facility, I have had the opportunity to speak with many family members and the general consensus agrees with me. We witnessed rehab patients be discharged and they were extremely happy with their experience at Hilaire. I even had the opportunity to speak with the rehab patient who has been here twice before.

I can say to everyone who is considering Hilaire, I sleep well at night knowing my mom is there.
