I give them one star because the Physical Therapy Team was very good, but it did not make up for the lack of care that my Mom received. My Mom needed lots of help because she could not walk, move, or feed herself. The facility is understaffed, so they don't have time to be helpful or compassionate. They were always in a hurry, and they told my Mom she took too long to take her pills. She could not reach the nurse button, and no one came when she called out for help in the night (we were there with her in the day). She was scheduled to get a shower once a week, and we had to remind them. We complained that she did not get her shower, and they came in late at night to give her a sponge bath and were rough with her. They told her that she got them in trouble. Now my Mom was not only in pain, but she was fearful. They also lost her clothes. When I talked to Management about problems, they gave me excuses with no solutions. I would not recommend this place to anyone!

Staff tried on 2 occasions to give my mother the WRONG medication. One nurse insisted my mother had a heart trans plant. Mother had a CORNEA transplant. Nursing staff also gave her eye drops in both eyes. Both eyes required a different eye drop in each, which mother had supplied. The same eye drop was put in both eyes. She was left sitting on a bed pan for more than an hour on numerous occasions. Social services insisted mother received therapy on the weekends. Social services also tried to set up the wrong visiting nurse for mother's home care. NEVER had she gotten therapy on a weekend. One nurse would throw mother's clothes at her. Medication that should have been given in the morning was given at night along with all other medications. In addition, mother never saw a staff doctor during her stay to explain her injury. She even asked on numerous occasions to have her injury explained. She saw a wound specialist via a computer scype, never the staff doctor. Social service person gave the impression of being very much in need of more training.

Had a family member there recently for rehab, Was happy with the physical therapy, however I did not see much encouragement from the nursing staff to follow through with ambulation or promotion of self care. The nursing staff was not rude but was not very warm/ friendly either. The extent of care was minimal in my opinion. Would not recommend or use this facility again.

Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility has SERIOUS internal communication problems. In my most recent experience, staff -- LPN, RNs, Nursing Supervisor of Rehab., PT, Nursing Director and Nurse Practitioner were never on the same page and I was given conflicting information as to the health of my loved one. Instead of relishing the final days of my loved one's life and enjoying spending quality time, I found it necessary to have frequent conversations and meetings with personnel who, until the ultimate death, continued to provide totally different prognoses.

Rehabilitation personnel do not seem to recognize their own limitations and seek outside help when warranted. A simple diagnosis of pneumonia was not made, in fact staff denied that pneumonia existed. Two hours later an ER team x-ray determined not only pneumonia but sepsis, from which my loved one ultimately died.

Staff also failed to recognize and adequately treat dehydration which they felt was "slight" until I insisted something be done for my loved-one's condition. ER team later determined there was "severe dehydration" and infused two litres of IV fluids in a period of two-hours.

No action was proactive - it often seemed as though my loved one was being confused with a nursing home patient and not one who had been sent to rehab for strength and return home. Much of the action taken was reactive to family concerns and discoveries.

Do NOT send your loved one to the rehabilitation facility unless you plan to spend every hour there keeping watch and advocating for him/her.

Ask for more information from patients and families who you know to have been there. Do not believe the marketing campaign or television commercials - they selected only from success stories and naturally are not going to focus on the negative.

Do not let proximity to home influence in your decision. Closer does not mean quality.
