Review of Momentum at South Bay for Rehab and Nursing

4 Star User Review

My mother is a long-term resident at Momentum. The facility is undergoing extensive renovation and, while no nursing home is a pleasure to visit (much less live in), there is some thought being given to what is being done. The nursing stations are functional and most common areas are aesthetically pleasing. The 2nd floor is completed but most of the long-term rooms have yet to be renovated. The 1st floor even has a bake shop for free snacks, tea and coffee. Therapy rooms seem to be functional and equipped.

My greatest criticism is with staffing levels. The staff itself seems qualified and competent but there are simply not enough of them. Sometimes the nursing station is totally unmanned (try calling and have the phone ring and ring and ring and ring… and ring and ring) and it is occasionally difficult to find someone to help you with a routine matter (like signing out to go shopping) and, in emergency situations (I shouldn't have to RUN to track somebody down) because the several staff are spread out amongst six wings. This tells me they're overworked, and probably underpaid because turnover seems to be high. This means nursing staff does not know the patients as well as they ought to. (For example, if my mother doesn't eat she can slip into diabetic shock. If staff is too busy to notice when they collect her meal tray, that's problematic.)

There are certainly worse facilities out there. At Momentum, there seems to be intent on the part of management to make things better and I understand that it's a process. I am counting on shortcomings being rectified. If they're not, the Dept. of Health is a phone call away.
