Review of The Manor of Farmington Hills

I work for Kresge Eye Institite in Detroit Michigan. A patient who is a resident of The Manor of Farmington Hills was sent to my place of work for an Ophthalmic Evaluation. The patient Coded in our office today. He went into Insulin Shock. EMS had to be called and the patient was sent to Detroit Receiving (ER). The "aid" who was sent with the patient was not a RN, not a LPN, not even a CNA, she was actually a Receptionist at the Nursing Home. The patient has a history of a cerebral vascular accident, and is unable to communicate verbally and is completely immobile. He was sent to our office strapped into a head-rested in a wheel chair with a urinary catheter, a walking cast on his Left foot, and the Right foot was aputated below the knee. Due to the patient's mental status, inability to communicate and pain medication toxicity level, a thorough ophthalmic exam was nearly impossible. Clearly, this patient is NOT the type of patient who can answer questions for himself, voice complaints, or alert those around him when and if something is wrong. Obviously, an unqualified Receptionist who had so little knowledge about the patient that she had to call the facility just to obtain the knowledge that the patient was a diabetic. She knew nothing of his medical history, knew nothing about what behavior would be considered typical or atypical for this patient in particular or in general, because she is a Receptionist, and NOT a healthcare provider. She told us that she usually does not go to doctor's appointments with patients, but that she was told today that she "would have to help out." If they would have sent a qualified aid, this could have been avoided. Need I say more???

Doesn't surprise me at all. They killed my mother in 2002 through neglect. I couldn't be there 24 hours a day - only 6-8 hours - and the other 16 hours they made sure she was going to live in hell when her son wasn't around.
