Review of Patuxent River Health and Rehabilitation Center

I am displeased with the overall care my Mom has received there. Currently, I am trying to get her home if not transferred another facility. It might be a good fit for some, but my biggest complaints are how slow they are at responding when the nurse light is turned on (they come in and turn the light off, say someone is coming and usually an hour goes by before anyone comes in to service…ie. bed pan, pain meds). Also the lack of communication and coordination between the therapy group and the nursing staff to properly manage pain so therapy is tolerable seems to be a challenge for this facility. I feel bad for anyone there who does not have an advocate to nudge things along for them. It seems they are severely short staffed and are tasked with so much paper work that some of the patients are neglected, not being any individuals fault. Management of the facility needs to be aware how severely this impacts the overall care of the patients.

My experience was very similar. When I stated that we wanted to take my father home they questioned whether my Mom could "watch him". She is more capable and committed than any nursing assistant on their staff and we knew he was safe to leave. They became very angry that we wanted to leave because his insurance had authorized a longer stay. However, he did not need inpatient care anymore and being there was depressing him, but they would not help us with the discharge and stated they needed more time (4 days!!) for their paperwork!
