This is the worst nusing home I have ever seen… I'm surprise the state haven't shut them down… The staff is not too bad but the upper mangerment all need too be fired. The person who run the facility has no respect for others. The facility is nasty and need too be shut down…Or need to get better mangerment for there staff.

This place is bad. There is never enough staff, the management treats the staff horrible, the residents DO NOT get the care that they need. I have seen firs hand that the management does not provide enough staff and staff training to properly care for the residents. 1 CNA to care for 2040 residents and one nurse. Some times there is only one nurse and 2-3 CNAs for 70+ residents. No wonder call lights do not get answered and residents have sores from not being changed.

Do not work here or put your loved one here!

My Dad moved in a year ago and we love the place. The staff is wonderful. The owners work on site so they know exactly what's going on and deal with problems directly. Staff morale seems very high. The residents are the first priority. The facilities are being upgraded under new ownership, and staff members have told me the management is much improved. Briarwood also got top rating from the state this month. I wish I could read the one-star reviews here to see what problems the reviewers had, but my family can give Briarwood an unreserved recommendation.

5 stars for the wonderfully caring staff, who made every effort to provide gentle care to my loved one. Even the gruff head of food service is amazing after you get to know her! Three stars for the building itself - but that isn't what makes or breaks a nursing home…and it is, gradually, undergoing renovation.

It's the people who matter - the people who take daily care of your family member. That's what makes Briarwood so special.

I recently spent some time in the "Bounce Back" area to gain a bit more strength before going home after being in the hospital for a while. Outside of the fact that there seemed to be a rather large turnover in the staff of the facility most of the staff that I met were polite and tried to work with you. My biggest complaint is the laundry service that they provided seemed to be either unwilling or unable to read the tags on the clothes and get them back to the correct people. I went in with a t-shirt, socks, underwear, and a pair of blue jeans. I originally purchased these jeans while I was on the road driving an over the road truck. I gave them to the laundry to be washed and returned to me and waited for most of 2 or 3 weeks until 2 days before I was going to leave the facility I asked for them to find and return my jeans. They never did and after nearly a month of calling and asking about them I finally told them that on the next work day I would be filing a small claims court case and that the filing costs were $85 dollars and that I would be asking for that in addition to the cost of the jeans. That afternoon they called and said they had "my" jeans and I could pick them up. When I picked them up they turned out to be Walmart specials so thin that they will never last, but at least they tried eventually anyway. Just be warned not to count on getting your clothes back if you send them to their laundry.

My mother-in-law has lived here for 3 years now. Having a background in healthcare myself, all facilities face staffing challenges, however, Doris has always received the highest quality care available. The staff treat her as if she were their own mother or grandmother. They take a genuine interest in our kids and grandchildren as well. As my father continues to age it's comforting to know there is a place waiting with him. As far as previous reviews are concerned, things were rocky for a while, but I was never concerned about the care Doris was receiving. Staff notified us whenever there was a chance in Doris' condition. Thank you all!!!

My MIL entered this nursing home, after a fall ,against our advice and the advice of several nurses in the hospital she was treated in. Upon entering, on second shift, for a visit with my grandson, we were greeted with an overwelming odor of feces and urine. Once we found someone to tell us what room she was in, which turned out to be wrong, we went to the dining area and found her. My grandson's enthusiasm was fading by the minute. The dining room was tiny, crowded and some what chaotic with staff yelling over the heads of residents at each other. The food was a discrase. How can you not cut through a piece of french toast, aside for the fact that it was ice cold?! My grandson asked if we could go outside and we took a short walk out front on the home's sidewalk. That was cut short when we passed a room with the curtians wide open, it was dark outside, the lights on and a woman laid out, nude below the waist getting some sort of procedure done! To make a long story short: night time staff unfriendly, food bad, place smells! I realize this is a nursing home and nothing is perfect but this place is like walking into another world at least on second shift. She choze this place for convience.

I would not let your loved ones live here. They are severely understaffed and treat all their employees like crap. Their DON is the rudest and most uncaring person I have ever met. The staff and residents are all afraid of or dislike her. If you have a family member here, you should be carefully watching over them, or better yet, move them somewhere else. Don't work here, and don't take your family members here.

My uncle is at this facility until he is done with radiation treatments. My uncle had surgery for throat cancer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and had to have his voice box removed, so he can't talk. He also has two prosthetic legs, due to his diabetes. During one of he hottest days of the summer, they took him outside in a wheelchair, sat him in the sun, and left him out there for about 45 minutes. When they finally took him back inside, he was dehydrated to the point of having to be re-admitted into the Univ of Iowa Hospitals. He was there for two days. When we (the family) called the nursing home, the head nurse, Karen, was very rude and said she didn't know what happened. A nursing student took him out there. She acted as though she was agitated that we would even inquire about what happened to him.

This is not the kind of care, or attitude that is acceptable.
