STAY AWAY. Do not send your loved ones here. This place needs to be shut down and insurance companies need to hold them accountable. My grandmother was admitted on 12/29/15 after a surgery for a broken hip. Within one week, she fell while in the bathroom (she was wearing a diaper and should not have been in the bathroom as she has not sat or stood on her own). As a result of her fall, she broke her tibia and fibula. No one from the facility called us. The fall happened on Monday January 4th. My mother went to visit on Wednesday January 6th and the roommate of my grandmother told my mother that she fell. No one from the facility said anything. My mother looked at her leg and it was very swollen and demanded that they xray it. Of course, it was broken in two places. She was rushed to the emergency room close by and had emergency surgery. How can a facility that is supposed to care for patients 24 hours a day allow for this to happen. Please, STAY AWAY!

My Mother had her hip broken while she was there by the exercise trainer. She was dumped in front of the door to her room and didn't tell any body. She was left there her for hours and she couldn't move.

Also if the nurses don't like you they give you bread and water for dinner to punish you.

I would not give this place any stars but the rating system makes you put one in. This place is criminal. She could have died from the neglect. I had to call 911 to get her out of there.

Please report your complaints to the AHCA, Agency of Health Care Administration in Florida.

I am writing this letter to inform you of the poor and unconscionable treatment my father received at the Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, located at 4200 Washington Street, Hollywood, FL 33021, phone number, (954) 981-6300,location South Wing. My father was a patient diagnosed for COPD and Atrial fibrillation. After he was treated for his condition at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, I entrusted his care to Hillcrest. I feel compelled to tell you about the horrible, nightmare type of experience we endured during my father’s 11 day stay in the rehab section of Hillcrest nursing home establishment.

I first went to check out Hillcrest when I was informed that my father would need to be discharged to a skilled nursing facility. I was greeted by a nice, friendly woman who gave me a tour of Hillcrest. The facility was clean and had ample storage space, and it looked like renovations were taking place. She told me that they tried to match up the personalities of the patients, and it was made clear that they would not match dementia patients with the other patients.

I would now like to tell you about the poor treatment we received at Hillcrest.

    1. I was lied to since my father who did not have dementia was placed in the same room as a dementia patient. We were unaware of the other gentlemen’s condition for over a week since he appeared to sleep most of the time. We became aware of the situation when he became more mobile, and started talking to himself. Early one morning at about 3:30 am, that man stood up naked in front of my weak father, wiped his own armpits with a towel and tried to put that towel over my dad’s face. My father told him to go away, and luckily the guy did, however no nurse was there to help my dad. I realize that in a nursing facility, the staff cannot be there at all times, but I feel that my father should have had a reasonable expectation of safety during his stay, and should have not been placed with a dementia patient. However, in Hillcrest’s behalf, they did change my father’s room the next day, and during the time my father was there, no other patients were placed in that room.

    2. During the daytime hours, the nurses and aides seemed to be performing some of their duties. (Remember that is when tours are conducted). However, for example, on one occasion, when I had to run an errand, my father called me and told me he pressed the button and had been waiting for a whole hour to get something to drink. That seemed to be the norm, and I felt I could not trust the staff.

During the evenings; however, the nurses and aides hide in the nurses’ lounge, and patients are ignored and left to fend for themselves. We observed that at least an hour would go by, and none of the staff appeared. On a number of occasions my husband and I heard patients yelling for the nurse, some of them able to press the button and some not, and we had to find someone to help them.

    3. Our worst experience was when my father had a constipation problem for about 5 to 7 days. (I had to bring it to their attention.) The doctor on staff had ordered an enema at about 7:00 am and it was not done until 8:00 pm of that evening. I think the “day nurse” decided she did not want to do it, so she put it off for the “night nurse.” The “day nurse” must have told the “night nurse” that I complained too much, so I believed that the “night nurse” put off doing the enema for as long as possible. Also, when we left, the “night nurse” could not even look me in the eye. By the time he got the enema, it was excruciating for him. Once he got transferred to the hospital, he had to be treated for the damage done, and he still complained of pain.

    4. At the end of my father’s stay, my husband was given a call that my father needed to be taken back to the emergency room or to their hospice care. He was told we had one hour to decide, and get him there. I got to the hospital within 20 minutes of the call, and I asked if I could come back later and get my father’s things. I was told that I had to take all of his things then, since they might need the bed. I grabbed what I could since the ambulance was waiting outside. I had to ask my husband to pick up the rest when he finished work. I did come back later because I remembered I left something in the refrigerator. The “bed” was not taken, and in fact they had quite a few empties. There was no need for this abusive treatment.

    5. Also, I did not find Hillcrest to be very “family caregiver friendly “. Everything is “locked up”. This includes water, ice, and any food or drinks that we were allowed to bring in. I appreciate the fact that they want to prevent theft; however, this puts the caregiver at the mercy of the staff who do not want to perform their jobs.

I do not know if these incidents just occurred in the South Wing, or if this was standard behavior throughout the facility. In the South Wing, when I asked for a fan in my dad’s room, I was ignored. When I went to another wing and asked for a fan, maintenance was paged and responded immediately.

In conclusion, as I said before this experience was just a nightmare. I think Hillcrest’s job should have been to make my father’s final days as comfortable as possible. However, they made his life miserable, and he refused to return to Hillcrest after he was discharged from the hospital to return again to a nursing home.

I will say the only positive thing I could find about the experience, was a nurse named Renata who worked in the South Wing. She always smiled, was very helpful, and was very attentive to her patients. She even helped me get my father’s things together when my father had to go back to the hospital. She treated each patient as if they were the only one.

I know this is not the type of letter that you like to receive. However, I just thought this type of neglect and abuse by Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center should be brought to your attention. Also, every nursing home should be evaluated at night as well as during the daytime.

NOT TO SEND MY LOVE ONE THERE. THIS FACILTY ISN'T CAPABLE OF TAKING CARE OF ANYONE WITH WOUNDS THAT NEEDS CARE, I THINK THEY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WOUND CARE, SINCE THEY LET MY SON ALMOST LOOSE HIS ARM AND LEG DUE TO NOT TAKING PROPER TREATMENT THERE AND NOT TAKING HIM TO GET A INFECTION IN HIS LEG TO A HOSPITAL. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE, JUST ASK THE PATIENTS THERE THAT ARE WISE AND SOUND MINDED, THEY WILL TELL YOU HOW THEY ARE TREATED.
