Yes the place looks nice and does not smell like a nursing home. However, the care provided for the residents is not good. This facility is dysfunctional where supervision is concerned. The CNAs run this facility and do as they wish. The residents lay in their urine and feces for half the day and only get changed during the last rounds, which means they get tended to 1 out of 4 rounds. I know this for a fact because I was a CNA and witness to all the horrors. I would constantly complain but because the nurses could not be bothered to write an incident report the neglect would go unnoticed. I got fired for speaking my mind which apparently is frowned upon in this facility. The rate of UTI and skin breakage is extremely high in this facility due to the neglect and lack of proper cleaning. I will miss my former residents and I know they will miss me as well because I was always very good to them as it should be, but I'm also happy to be out of this dysfunctional facility.

My father developed a stage 4 pressure ulcer that went into the bone at this facility. The Physical Therapist refused to work him my dad (who had just had spinal fusion). She stated to our family at the first Care meeting that Medicare does not pay for range of motion. Needles to say we weren't the only one's shocked--plenty of the staff were wide mouthed after she voiced this. My father's Neurosurgeon and Physiatrist stated it is imperative he receive physical therapy daily within the first year after this surgery in order to gain back as much mobility as possible. When I contacted Medicare and told them what the Physical Therapist had stated in the meeting, Medicare was very concerned and said that my father was covered and should be receiving physical therapy on a daily basis. Even after they received faxes from my dad's Neurosurgeon, they still refused to treat him but they did leave there mark with the stage 4 pressure ulcer. We took my father elsewhere after this.

Gladeview is currently housing my grandmother for 10 days. After reading the reviews listed I agree with 1 star. The building does not smell, but the staff is very rarely visible phone calls go unanswered (at the rare chance they are answered staff if unbelievably rude!). I came for dinner the other night and absolutely every single resident looked as miserable as the could possibly get!! I can not speak to what this facility was like previously, but right now I would not place anyone in there let alone a family member. I can't wait for this 10 days to be over with. Whoever gave this facility a 5 star rating had to be an owner or business partner as I don't think even a staff member could give them a 3 on their best day with a clean conscious!! It is too late for our family to change plans and grandma will be ok we are stopping by twice a day for a couple hours bringing outside food and visitors. Please do not bring your family here especially if advanced care is needed. Generally elderly people are friendly social reasonably happy and more than willing to talk. Here they are all miserable you can see on their face in their emotions everything is just bad! all that is good is that the building is clean!

Apple Rehab gave my Mom her life back. Not being in the area, we didn't realize how dependent my Mom had become… she fell and ended up in the hospital.

This home cared for her, got her back on her feet and gave her the social life she missed so much. She decided to stay long term, she made friends there, they are now family.

I had high hopes. Mom had been there twice before after hospital stays. She has a progressive dementia and in the past two months has lost her ability to stand. We had decided to place her there long term and they were very welcoming. I was very impressed with so many of the staff. She began in rehab and then was suddenly moved to a room in long term. Her roommate was not compatible - advanced Alzheimer's and rather noisy…poor soul. Apparently Mom began yelling back at night and the nursing home decided it was not the place for her. Although I asked for a simple room change which I think would have been very helpful. The social worker told me they were not equipped to handle dementia patients. ???? It seems to me they are very well equipped and have many of them - some much more advanced than Mom.

They will transfer her in two days. A good thing in one way because hopefully she will have a more compatible roommate. But I feel they were being dishonest with me about the reason for transferring her and this really bothers me.

Wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy! My mother was in this facility before the holidays, and there was no heat in the room. She was given an extra blanket and told they would have to wait till the following week to get maintenance to fix it, because everyone was off for the holidays. Are you kidding???? I had to call and complain just so they would call someone out so she could have heat…mind you, this was freezing temperatures at Christmas time. Seemed understaffed also, or just too busy for helping with showers. One shower a week…I think inmates get more than that!

Though I have never, personally, visited Apple in Old Saybrook, my mother (84) chose it for rehab after knee replacement surgery. It was a great shock to us that, after surviving surgery at L&M, days later she died at Apple. We are all left wondering how it was that Apple let this happen. Please consider other options if you are a high-needs patient that needs more supervision.

Since Gladeview Health Care Center left from Athena and became privately owned and also brought upon new administration things started taking a downward spiral. Staffing started diminishing, wages were frozen, residents moral started dropping and several other things. When comparing Gladeview HCC to other Nursing home facilities in the area or the state you will see it has been scored much lower then several nursing homes. Gladeview HCC does have very loving staff in the Nurses and Aids but the way the administration runs the place is purely business. There number one concern is making money and marketing. Granted thats what most businesses do is try to make money but there should be a fine line when it comes to peoples lives. As an administrator or director of nursing you should want to know your residents and that presence is not felt at Gladeview. When its all said and done do your family some justice and take a ride down the road to a place called Bride Brook in Niantic as they are a 5 star rated building compared to Gladeviews 2 star rate on a scale of 1-5 by the Department of Health. Or even a little further up the road to Bayview HCC in Waterford which is an Athena building and once upon a time used to be a sister facility of Gladeview. Have a good day folks and take care of your loved ones….

I've no idea how the person who gave this facility a 1 star rating could do so. This is the first and ONLY facility of it's kind that feels the way Gladeview feels when you're there and how it is run. You never smell urine in the hallways or see unhappy faces. The staff is alive, upbeat, and professional. There is a positive energy throughout and you can't beat the location. It's convenient to I-95, easy to find, and has wonderful views. It's modern, clean, and efficient. When you're shopping around for a loved one, Gladeview should be on your list without a doubt.
