This is an excellent facility. The speech therapists, dieticians, and nursing staff are all very, very friendly and knowledgable. They're attentive and caring. The administrative staff are very on top of all the paperwork. The cleaning and assistance staff are gentle with the elderly. This is a trustworthy place. I would only suggest that you supplement food given with that cooked at home, if you really want someone to gain weight. The food isn't "great" but it is passable as food…

My mother was admitted to Gilroy Healthcare in October after over 18 months of repeated hospitalizations due to medication complications and other health issues. I was initially weary of allowing her to go here, because of their Medicare audit (I am a regulatory compliance auditor by profession). I'm happy to say that I am more than elated, satisfied and finally at peace with the level of care my mom is receiving in a nursing home.

The staff at Gilroy Healthcare is nothing short of EXCEPTIONAL (and no, I don't work for them). Her nurse and CNAs have basically adopted her and treat her as though she is one of their own family members. Her doctor was absolutely wonderful about answering my questions and responding to my concerns about her care. He spent over 45 minutes on the phone with me, during our initial contact, so that he could review all of the notes that I had left regarding my mother's condition.

My mom has medication-induced dementia that was caused by her receiving an anti-psychotic over 18 months ago that she didn't need. Ever since the medication was introduced to her system, my mother has required 24/7 supervision. I have spent the past 18 months trying to get her back to normal, but due to repeated hospital visits that reintroduced the offending medications into her system (despite my many protests), her condition has progressed to the point that I need help to care for her.

She was in a previous nursing home in San Jose, where we live. I had to discharge her due to the horrible care (or lack thereof) that she received. I also had to stand vigil every night that she was there to make sure that she was receiving decent care. I constantly had to request that her bed be changed, the bed rails be raised, that she be fed more (she lost 10 lbs in the first month there), etc. I don't have to make these types of requests at Gilroy Healthcare. The staff are wonderful, very attentive, approached me about her not eating and asked what foods she prefers so she would eat more, and even call me at night, if my mom wants to talk to me. They follow all of the instructions that I have left for them to the letter. They do not deviate from my instructions without contacting me for approval first.

I can't begin to put in words how much peace of mind their staff has brought me. I no longer feel like I have to watch over the care that my mother receives, and I don't have to be concerned about her being over-medicated as I had to in the other nursing home. Thankfully, no one on their team believes in treating their residents with meds first. Instead of having to give my mother medication to calm her down, they take the time to sit with her and make her feel comfortable with knowing that someone is there with her.

I originally planned to move my mother back to San Jose as soon as I could find an open bed, but now that she has been at Gilroy Healthcare for over 2 months, I feel very good about allowing her to remain there. I am even planning to take a vacation soon. This is a true testament to how comfortable I feel with the level of care that she is receiving. I would have never considered leaving her alone with anyone prior to now.

If you are looking for a good facility for a loved one, this is a facility that allows you to feel comfortable each time you walk out the door and have to leave your loved one behind. I have experienced an extensive amount of frustration and anxiety over the past 18 months trying to get my mother the care that she deserves. I finally feel like I don't have to fight with anyone to take care of her or babysit their staff to make sure they are paying attention to her. I know she is now being treated the way I would want someone to treat me.

In case you are wondering about the 4 stars on the cleanliness rating, I am a total germ-a-phobe and can't stand to see the slightest bit of dirt/germs on anything that isn't within my own home. With that said, the bathroom and linens aren't always up to my "perfectionist" standards, but they do clearly clean the facility on a daily basis. It doesn't have the usual "nursing home" smell to it. It actually smells quite clean. I can't expect the bathrooms and linens to be clean all of the time (I visit my mother in the evenings up to 3 times a week). Besides, I know the staff is busy tending to the most important items within the facility, the residents.
